Gusts reach 7 Beaufort in a blustery Thursday mix

A turbulent day for the coast as thin dust suspends in the atmosphere.

Newsroom

A turbulent Thursday is underway. While a weak high-pressure system is technically in the vicinity, the conditions feel far from settled. The atmosphere is currently suspended with thin dust, and the winds are picking up significant speed, creating a blustery and grey backdrop for the day.

Today is not the day for a leisurely boat trip or an unsecured balcony umbrella. The weather will be cloudy throughout, with local showers passing through and the distinct possibility of an isolated thunderstorm. On the highest peaks of Troodos, winter holds firm with potential snow or sleet.

The primary concern today is the wind. Blowing from the northeast to southeast, it will be moderate to strong (4 to 5 Beaufort), but don't be caught off guard. Gusts will reach very strong to gale force (6 to 7 Beaufort) locally and at times. Consequently, the sea will be rough to very rough, making coastal areas particularly wild.

Temperatures remain suppressed under the cloud cover and dust. We are looking at highs of 12°C inland and 15°C along the coast. In the highest mountains, it is a chilly 6°C.

Tonight, the unsettled theme continues. Expect intervals of local showers and isolated thunderstorms to keep the night noisy in places, with more snow or sleet likely on the Troodos peaks. The winds will remain elevated, especially along the coast where gusts will hit 5 to 6 Beaufort, keeping the sea in a rough state.

The lead-up to the weekend remains variable.

Friday: A slight breather. The skies turn partly cloudy with just isolated showers, though snow remains possible on the peaks.

Saturday: A weak low-pressure system moves in, bringing a return to mainly cloudy skies, local showers, and thunderstorms. However, conditions should improve by the late afternoon.

Sunday: The weather finally settles down, becoming partly cloudy at times. The mercury will start a slow climb, gradually rising through Sunday to reach or slightly exceed seasonal averages.

Snow update: Despite the wind, the snow base is holding. The depth at Chionistra was recorded at 21 centimeters yesterday afternoon.
