Hackers hit Bank of Cyprus Oncology Center, steal patient data

Cybercriminals threaten to leak sensitive files as authorities race to contain the breach.

The Bank of Cyprus Oncology Center has reported a serious data breach after hackers stole sensitive patient and employee information and then threatened to leak it publicly, the center announced Thursday.

The center said it has already filed a complaint with police and notified both the Commissioner for Personal Data Protection and the Digital Security Authority. Cybersecurity teams and external specialists are now working around the clock to contain the damage.

In a written statement, the Oncology Center confirmed what many feared: the attackers managed to access personal data belonging to patients and staff. The hackers are now threatening to publish the stolen material across media and social platforms, a move that would escalate the situation dramatically.

The center stressed that the case is being handled in full coordination with all relevant state authorities, following their instructions step-by-step. Additional security measures have been put in place to reinforce its systems and prevent further breaches.

Despite the incident, the Oncology Center says all medical services and day-to-day operations are running normally.

“We are committed to addressing this situation and protecting the personal data of our patients and employees,” the statement read, as authorities continue their investigation into what is shaping up to be one of Cyprus’ most worrying cyberattacks involving a healthcare institution.
