President Nicos Christodoulides announced that discussions on the Cyprus-Crete electricity interconnection are advancing positively. Addressing criticisms that the government is delaying decisions on the project, Christodoulides stressed that the government is focused on long-term benefits rather than short-term political gains.

Speaking at a Pancyprian Committee of Refugees event in Agia Anargyros, Christodoulides responded to political parties' critiques, stating, "It is perfectly fitting that some people are thinking about the next elections, while we, as a government, are thinking about the next generations."

He highlighted recent international interest in the project, noting that his recent trip to the UAE was strategically significant. "Our discussions are progressing, and we are working on specific aspects," he said. Christodoulides emphasized that the final decisions will prioritize the interests of the Cypriot people and future generations.

Christodoulides stressed that the government is focused on long-term benefits rather than short-term political gains.

The President also revealed plans to meet with Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis in Athens on September 19 to further discuss the interconnection project. Christodoulides mentioned that daily communications have been ongoing to address key details.

In response to questions about Israel’s support and Turkey’s opposition, Christodoulides avoided commenting on Turkey’s stance, focusing instead on positive international recognition. He noted that the U.S. acknowledges Cyprus’s strategic role in the region and affirmed that decisions will be made based on constructive approaches rather than external pressures.

Regarding his recent UAE visit, Christodoulides confirmed discussions on energy cooperation and the interconnection project. He also dismissed speculation about a government reshuffle, stating, "There is no such issue; I have already taken a position."
