Cyprus’s Transport Committee reviewed law proposals on Tuesday that would change traffic fine deadlines, introduce discounts for quick payments, and possibly install countdown timers at traffic lights, according to a report by Christos Bouris of Kathimerini. The proposal, co-drafted by MPs Fotini Tsiridou and Onoufrios Koulla, suggests extending the payment deadline for traffic fines from 30 to 90 days. This idea is gaining support but requires certain amendments before reaching a plenary vote.
According to the committee, the proposed extension should apply to all traffic fines, not just those issued through the photo-identification system. DISY MPs will draft this amendment, which the committee will revisit in two weeks. Although the proposal also suggests a potential discount for early payments, the Ministry ruled out implementing such discounts due to a standing policy decision.
Separately, ELAM proposed a countdown timer at traffic lights to show drivers the remaining time before lights change. AKEL backed a similar plan but asked for a stricter timeline, with an installation mandate within three months or suspension of fines for failure to comply with lights. However, Public Works officials indicated that technical constraints prevent the immediate installation of these timers.
The proposals reflect Cyprus’s ongoing efforts to improve road safety measures and simplify traffic fine payments for drivers.
