Lids on plastic beverage containers must be attached by July 2024

Environment Ministry sets deadline for compliance to reduce plastic waste

Newsroom

The Department of Environment within the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development, and Environment announced today that starting July 3, 2024, all plastic beverage containers up to three liters in capacity must be sold with their lids and caps attached. This measure aims to reduce plastic waste and its environmental impact.

The new regulation stipulates that any non-compliant stock must be withdrawn from the market before the effective date. This applies specifically to single-use plastic products where the lids and covers must remain attached during the intended use of the product.

The Department clarified that the rule encompasses a wide range of beverage containers, including those used for milk, water, wine, beer, soft drinks, juices, and other liquid refreshments. Both standard plastic bottles and composite containers fall under this mandate. However, it exempts glass or metal containers with plastic lids and caps, as well as containers used for liquid foodstuffs meant for specific medical purposes.

Furthermore, metal lids or covers that incorporate plastic gaskets are not categorized as plastic under this regulation, hence they are also excluded from the requirement.

This initiative is part of a broader effort to mitigate environmental pollution caused by plastic waste, promoting more sustainable consumption patterns. The Environment Department emphasizes the necessity for manufacturers and retailers to adhere to this new standard promptly to ensure a smooth transition before the July deadline.
