A man was carried on the bonnet of a speeding car for nearly two kilometres after a collision on the Larnaca Airport motorway on May 6, according to footage and testimony published by RoadReportCY.
The incident happened at about 12:40 p.m. when a silver rented Mazda Demio crashed into the back of a vehicle carrying the victim and his sister. After both passengers stepped out to speak with the other driver, the man allegedly refused to exchange information or cooperate, repeatedly insisting that he had to leave immediately.
The victim then noticed a police patrol vehicle parked around 80 metres away on the hard shoulder and attempted to signal officers for help. When the driver realised police were approaching, he accelerated suddenly while the victim was standing in front of the car. The impact threw the man onto the bonnet, where he managed to hold on as the vehicle sped away.
Police began chasing the rental car, which authorities said reached speeds of up to 150 kilometres per hour. The victim remained on the bonnet for roughly two kilometres before the driver slowed near the Kalo Chorio roundabout to around 30 to 40 kilometres per hour. The man then managed to get off the moving vehicle safely before collapsing onto the road.
Officers stopped immediately to assist him and an ambulance transported him to Larnaca General Hospital. He spent six hours in the emergency department undergoing medical examinations, including a CT scan, which confirmed he had not suffered internal injuries. Doctors treated abrasions to his hands, arms, legs, chest and back, along with bruising and rib pain. He is also wearing a foam neck collar as a precaution.
“Considering what happened, I was very lucky. It could have been much worse,” the victim said.
Despite the police pursuit, the suspect escaped. Officers were unable to record the registration number because their attention was focused on protecting the victim during the chase. Authorities later obtained dashcam footage and the investigation remains ongoing.
The victim submitted an official statement to police on the evening of May 7. No arrests have been made so far, and investigators are asking witnesses or anyone with video footage, particularly images showing the rental car’s licence plate, to contact police.
