On December 4, 2024, UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson was fatally shot outside the New York Hilton Midtown in Manhattan. The assailant, dressed in dark clothing and wearing a mask, approached Thompson from behind and fired multiple shots before fleeing the scene on an e-bike. Thompson was in New York for an investor conference.
Following the incident, authorities launched an intensive manhunt for the suspect. On December 9, police arrested 26-year-old Luigi Mangione at a McDonald’s in Altoona, Pennsylvania. Mangione, a former tech worker and Ivy League graduate, was found in possession of a 9mm ghost gun with a silencer, multiple fake IDs, and a handwritten manifesto expressing animosity toward corporate America.
Investigators revealed that Mangione’s actions were driven by his deep-seated resentment toward large corporations, particularly those in the healthcare industry. His manifesto, which was recovered during his arrest, criticized healthcare companies for prioritizing profits over patient care. In one passage, he wrote, "These parasites simply had it coming." Reports suggest that his grievances may have stemmed from personal experiences, including dissatisfaction with the treatment of a sick relative and his own chronic health issues.
Authorities linked Mangione to the crime scene using forensic evidence and surveillance footage showing a masked individual ambushing Thompson. They also discovered that Mangione had been in Manhattan since November 24, using a fake ID to check into a hostel.
After his arrest, Mangione was formally charged with multiple offenses, including murder, firearms violations, and forgery. He is currently being held without bail and awaits extradition to New York to face these charges. Prosecutors stated that Mangione’s actions were premeditated and targeted.
As the investigation continues, authorities are examining Mangione's writings and online activities to uncover further insights into his motives and determine whether he acted alone. Thompson’s death has sent shockwaves through both the corporate and public spheres, raising concerns about violence against high-profile individuals.
