Israeli forces stormed into Gaza City overnight in the biggest ground assault of the war.
The military said two divisions pushed into the city late Monday, seizing large areas by morning. More divisions are on the way. Officials urged all civilians to flee immediately, calling Gaza City a “dangerous combat zone.”
Hundreds of thousands have already left, but as many as half a million remain trapped. Israel says it has set up camps with food and medical care further south. Aid groups warn conditions are collapsing and accuse Israel of blocking critical supplies.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu pressed for the invasion despite pushback from Israel’s top general, who favored waiting for a possible hostage deal. Families of captives say the offensive could seal their loved ones’ fate.
U.S. President Donald Trump backed Israel and warned Hamas not to use hostages as shields.
The operation could last months. Israel says Hamas is down to a few thousand fighters, but fears ambushes and street battles ahead.
