Outgoing US Ambassador to Cyprus Julie S. Davis praised the growing relationship between the United States and Cyprus during a farewell meeting Monday with President Nikos Christodoulides, saying the two countries have built closer ties in security, business and diplomacy over the past two years.
The meeting took place at the Presidential Palace in Nicosia ahead of Davis’ departure from Cyprus at the end of her term.
For many Cypriots, the strengthening relationship between Washington and Nicosia has become increasingly visible in recent years, from defense cooperation and regional security discussions to growing American business interest on the island and closer political ties.
Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Davis thanked Christodoulides for what she described as “incredible cooperation,” not only during her own tenure but also throughout the broader development of relations between the two countries.
“It has been two remarkable years in terms of what we have done together for the people of the United States and the people of Cyprus,” she said.
Davis, who also serves as the US ambassador to Ukraine, said she will now travel to Ukraine, where she is expected to remain until the end of June.
The ambassador stressed that the growing partnership between Cyprus and the US was not the work of one individual, but the result of coordinated efforts on both sides.
She pointed to the role played by diplomats at the US Embassy and leadership in Washington, including President Donald Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, as well as the Cypriot government.
“We have done so much to protect our citizens,” Davis said, adding that cooperation in security matters had become especially important given developments in the region in recent years.
Cyprus has increasingly positioned itself as a strategic hub in the Eastern Mediterranean, particularly during regional crises involving evacuations and humanitarian operations, something that has brought the island into closer cooperation with Western allies, including the United States.
Davis also highlighted efforts to strengthen ties between ordinary Americans and Cypriots, saying one of the things she was most proud of was bringing people from both countries closer together.
She further pointed to expanding business links, noting that American companies are finding success in Cyprus while Cypriot businesses are increasingly looking toward opportunities in the United States.
“That is very exciting,” she said, adding that she felt honored to have served in Cyprus during this period of growing cooperation.
Speaking about her successor, John Breslow, Davis described him as “fantastic” and said he is currently awaiting confirmation by the US Senate.
“He is looking forward to coming here and will be a fantastic partner for Cyprus,” she said.
