Beachgoers in the popular Protaras resort area can expect an upgrade to their seaside experience as the Municipality of Paralimni - Deryneia begins installing 72 ultra-modern showers across 18 local beaches.

The new shower units, each equipped with four individual showers, foot washers, lighting, and contactless payment systems, aim to enhance convenience while supporting environmental sustainability, according to municipal officials.

Mayor Giorgos Nikolettos emphasized that the initiative is part of the municipality’s broader strategy for sustainable tourism and coastal improvement.

"Our priority is the continuous upgrade of our beaches to provide a modern and pleasant experience for both residents and visitors," Nikolettos said in a statement. "At the same time, by utilizing 'smart' technologies, we are strengthening our efforts to save natural resources, particularly water."

The installation marks a shift toward paid amenities on local beaches, drawing mixed reactions from residents and visitors online.

"Contactless payment capability will reduce water consumption and increase municipal revenue," commented local resident George Petrou on the municipality’s Facebook post. Petrou also advocated for a full smoking ban on all Protaras beaches, citing environmental and financial benefits.

Others were less enthusiastic. “So we’ll have to pay to take a shower?? Very clever, well done!!!!!!!!!” commented Elena Stamatiadou Georgiou, expressing frustration over what she views as an unnecessary charge.

Some users defended the measure. “It makes sense to pay for access to water or a service you want to enjoy,” replied Georgia Stavrou. “It’s not fair that I, as a taxpayer, should pay for someone else's shower.”

In addition to the showers, the municipality has reportedly installed new wooden changing rooms on Kapparis beach, though some residents noted that signage is still missing.

The rollout of the upgraded facilities is ongoing, with the municipality reaffirming its commitment to improving tourist infrastructure while aligning with eco-friendly practices.

The municipality has not specified pricing details for the shower usage.
