Phedonos criticizes EAC over delays in borehole connections

Paphos mayor raises concerns about impact on city’s greenery.

Paphos Mayor Phedon Phedonos has voiced concern over what he described as an unreasonable two-month delay by the Electricity Authority of Cyprus (EAC) in connecting municipal boreholes to the power grid, installations the city says are essential to protecting its urban greenery during the summer months.

“These boreholes were identified by the municipality to help secure alternative water sources,” Phedonos said. “We are working to prevent the destruction of the city’s greenery, and yet we’re facing prolonged delays for a basic utility connection.”

In a post on social media, the mayor said the EAC’s behavior was unacceptable and attributed the delay to the organization’s monopoly over electricity supply connections.

“The Electricity Authority has become a serious obstacle to development,” he wrote. “We’re trying to take action, and we’re forced to wait two months for them to connect the boreholes.”

He also criticized what he described as inconsistent performance by EAC employees, saying that in the past, when they received extra pay for overtime, “they would become productive, doing twice the work in the afternoons compared to the mornings.”

The EAC has not responded publicly to the mayor’s statements.
