The president of the Cyprus Turkish Bar Association, Hasan Esendagli, criticized the decision by a defacto court in the Turkish-occupied north to remand a Greek Cypriot couple in custody, calling it “disproportionate and severe.”
The couple was reportedly arrested on charges of trespassing on property, harassment, and obtaining personal data, and appeared before the illegal court in Trikomo (Iskele) earlier this week.
Esendagli said the ruling was excessive given the nature of the accusations. “The decision to remand them in custody appears disproportionate and severe,” he stated.
He noted that reciprocal legal actions between the two communities could escalate tensions. “Responding to unlawfulness with unlawfulness, or extremity with extremity, is not something we as legal professionals can defend,” he said.
Esendagli also cautioned against measures that could undermine legal security and the freedom of movement on the island. “Such perceptions could soon threaten everyone living in Cyprus, and the greatest harm from this will once again be suffered by Turkish Cypriots,” he added.
