SafeCY app upgraded to deliver real-time emergency alerts across the island

New update allows Civil Defence to send targeted warnings to phones, strengthening public safety system.

Cyprus authorities are upgrading the SafeCY mobile application to send emergency alerts directly to people’s phones, aiming to close a key gap in the country’s public warning system.

Officials say the revamped app will now allow the Cyprus Civil Defence to issue emergency notifications either nationwide or targeted to people located in a specific area affected by a crisis.

The move is designed to strengthen Cyprus’ ability to quickly warn the public during incidents such as fires, natural disasters, or security threats, especially as the island still lacks a fully operational 112-style mass alert system used in many European countries.

Under the new feature, civil defense can send alerts directly to users who are physically inside the affected area. At the same time, anyone who has the app installed, even if they are outside the zone, will still be able to see the notification inside the application for information purposes.

Authorities are urging the public to update or download the app to ensure they receive alerts.

To activate the system, users should:

  • Download or update the SafeCY app through the Google Play Store or Apple App Store.
  • Open the application and enable notifications when prompted.
  • Allow the app to access the device’s location, first by selecting “Allow while using the application” and then “Always allow” when prompted.

Location access is essential for the system to work, as it allows authorities to send alerts specifically to people in danger zones.

The app also includes a map of all officially registered shelters across Cyprus, offering residents guidance on where to go during emergencies.

Despite the upgrade, officials stressed that traditional warning methods remain in place. In major emergencies, the primary alert system will still be the sounding of sirens, supported by announcements from local authorities.

The new digital alerts are meant to add another layer of protection, putting critical information directly in citizens’ hands when every minute counts.
