School trip in limbo as unfit buses caught in the act

Minister declares war on unsafe buses

Newsroom

In a recent development reported by Dinos Ellinas, the president of the school committee, buses scheduled for a school trip to Omodos faced a setback as their tires were deemed unsafe by the Road Transport Department and the police in Limassol.

Mr. Ellinas shared details with 'Alpha Kalimera,' stating that the authorities discovered the unfit condition of the buses' tires, prompting immediate action.

According to Mr. Ellinas, the unsafe tires posed a potential risk to the pupils, leading to the decision to halt the original buses' use for the field trip. The responsible company was promptly notified, and alternative buses were arranged to ensure the safe transportation of students to their destination.

Reacting to the incident, Transport Minister Alexis Vafeadis expressed his dissatisfaction, labeling the situation as "unacceptable." He emphasized that all necessary measures dictated by legislation would be taken against the company involved.

Minister Vafeadis went a step further by requesting a comprehensive technical inspection for all buses owned by the company in question.

Addressing concerns about strengthening existing measures, the Minister outlined a two-pronged approach. Firstly, an increase in inspections is on the horizon, ensuring a more rigorous oversight of transportation safety. Secondly, the Minister proposed heightened penalties to enforce adherence to safety standards across the board.
