Serbia to reinstate mandatory military service after 13 years

Mandatory military service set to return in Serbia by 2025

Newsroom

Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić announced on Saturday the reinstatement of mandatory military service.

Speaking at a ceremony at the Military Academy, Vučić emphasized the need for a strong military and more weapons. “I hope you all understand how crucial it is to have a robust army and to acquire and produce more weapons,” he said.

The mandatory service will last 75 days, Vučić told new first officers promoted at the ceremony. “We do not wish to attack anyone, nor will we. However, we aim to deter those who threaten us relentlessly every day,” he added.

Serbia abolished compulsory military service in 2011 and has since relied on a professional army. To reinstate the requirement, it must be approved by both the government and the parliament, where Vučić’s party holds a solid majority.

Prime Minister Miloš Vučević stated on Friday that the government is prepared to expedite the proposal in parliament, with plans to implement it by 2025, provided logistical and administrative conditions are met.
