Seven people were arrested on Thursday in Ormideia following a joint police operation by the British Bases and the Republic of Cyprus, targeting modern slavery, illegal immigration, and unlawful employment.
According to a statement from the British Bases, the arrests took place at a potato packing plant where a Greek Cypriot employer was found to be hiring six undocumented workers. The six workers were arrested on charges of illegal residence and employment, while their employer faces charges related to illegal hiring practices.
The detained workers will be handed over to the Republic of Cyprus Police’s Aliens and Immigration Service for deportation, the statement added.
The operation involved four British Bases police officers, seven British Bases customs officers, and eight members of the Republic’s Labour and Social Security Bureau.
Senior Base Lieutenant Fanos Christodoulou described the raid as “extremely successful,” highlighting the close cooperation between British and Cypriot authorities.
“We take this type of crime very seriously and will continue to carry out similar operations in the future,” he said.
The joint effort highlights ongoing attempts by authorities to crack down on illegal employment and human trafficking across the island.
