Authorities prevented the spread of pollutants after a sailing vessel caught fire and sank while anchored at Larnaca Marina on Sunday, June 22.
The Ports Authority said it responded quickly after the marina’s management requested assistance. The tugboat VTS Ayia Marina and the pollution control vessel Aella were deployed to the scene.
Due to shallow waters and navigation safety concerns, the tugboat remained on standby at a safe distance, ready to intervene if the vessel drifted toward the nearby anchorage.
As the vessel’s condition worsened, raising the risk of sinking and pollution, the pollution control vessel Aella was activated as a precaution.
After the vessel sank, the tugboat was released, and the Aella deployed pollution containment booms around the wreck site. Markers were placed before the booms were set to prevent potential marine pollution.
The Ports Authority said all necessary measures were taken to combat and fully contain pollution observed on the sea surface, successfully preventing its spread in the area.
