Mother Nature is having a serious identity crisis. It is May in Cyprus, yet the atmosphere has decided to pull a winter wardrobe out of storage for one last uninvited encore. A weak low-pressure system is currently loitering, making for a very confused Tuesday.
The sky can’t quite make up its mind today, flipping between sunshine and heavy cloud cover. If you are in the eastern half of the island, don't be surprised if you run into an isolated shower or a cheeky thunderstorm after lunch.
The headline news, however, is happening at the top of the world. There is currently 19 cm of snow sitting on Chionistra. Let that sink in for a moment. It's May, and we are still talking about snow and sleet on the highest peaks. While the mountains shiver at a measly 7°C, the rest of us will see temperatures struggle to hit 19°C inland. It’s definitely more of a light jacket day than a beach day.
Tonight, the atmosphere finally decides to calm down. The clouds are heading home, leaving us with mostly clear skies. The winds will settle into a light breeze, and even the sea is dropping its grumpy morning attitude to become much calmer.
The midweek shift
Wednesday: There is still a lingering bit of moodiness in the air. Expect some local clouds to gather, particularly in the mountains, where a few afternoon showers might try to ruin a hike.
Thursday and Friday: The 'Great May Thaw' begins. We are looking at mostly clear skies and a very welcome, very noticeable rise in temperatures. We’ll finally be heading back toward the warm seasonal averages we actually signed up for, leaving the snow as nothing more than a weird memory from earlier in the week.
