Tuition spike hits Cypriot students in Bulgaria, diplomatic intervention sought

Cypriot students protest sudden fee jumps at Bulgarian universities.

Newsroom

Cypriot students studying in Bulgaria are sounding the alarm over significant tuition increases announced by several Bulgarian universities. The universities of Stara Zagora and Plovdiv recently raised fees across all years of study, with tuition for medical programs climbing from €9,000 to €10,000 and pharmacy programs jumping from €6,000 to €8,200.

In a statement, the Cypriot Student Organization in Bulgaria said the hikes could be difficult to reverse for new students but urged that current students not be forced to pay the higher rates, arguing they committed under different financial conditions.

The organization is calling on the Cypriot government to step in and protect the community, one of the largest groups of foreign students in Bulgaria. Letters requesting immediate action have been sent to top officials, including the President, the Speaker of the House, and ministers of finance, education, and foreign affairs.

“The Cypriot student community in Bulgaria faces sudden financial pressure that threatens our studies,” the group said.
