Police have arrested two young men in connection with an explosion caused by an improvised explosive device outside a restaurant owned by a well-known businessman in Limassol, authorities said Thursday.

The blast targeted a business linked to a close associate of murdered football agent Stavros Demosthenous, adding to growing concerns over ongoing criminal activity in the city.

Police said the suspects, aged 19 and 21, were handcuffed late Wednesday night and taken into custody to assist investigators. Authorities are questioning the pair as part of an ongoing probe into the incident.

The explosion, which occurred outside the restaurant, caused alarm in the area, but no injuries were reported. Investigators are examining whether the attack was intended as a warning or part of a wider pattern of targeted criminal acts.

According to police sources, the businessman has previously been the target of similar incidents, with arrests made in earlier cases connected to attacks against his property.

Officers are now working to determine who ordered the placement of the device and whether the suspects acted alone or on behalf of others.

The incident comes amid heightened scrutiny of organized crime activity following a series of violent episodes in Limassol, including the fatal shooting of Demosthenous last year, a case that continues to dominate headlines and fuel public concern about escalating underworld disputes.

Police say investigations remain ongoing and further arrests have not been ruled out.
