Two dead cows were recently found exposed in a rural area along the Oruntas–Agia Marina Xyliatou road, raising concerns over public health and the environment, local watchdog group Ecological and Cultural Intervention Oruntas reported Saturday.
In a letter to the Agriculture Minister, the organization called for immediate action by authorities, warning that the discovery poses a serious risk amid ongoing epidemiological vigilance in the country.
“This incident, in the context of an epidemiological alert, constitutes a serious danger to public health and highlights dangerous gaps in the control and response mechanism,” the group said in a statement. They also emphasized that this is not an isolated case.
The watchdog claims the incident is part of a broader pattern of similar events linked to illegal livestock operations and weak enforcement of environmental and sanitary laws in the area. Authorities are being urged to investigate the case thoroughly and conduct a full inspection of local farms to prevent further risk.
With Cyprus already battling outbreaks of foot-and-mouth disease, this discovery underscores the ongoing challenges in protecting both public health and the island’s agricultural sector.
