António Guterres has selected Major General Mohammad Asadullah Minhazul Alam of Bangladesh to take on the role of Force Commander of the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP).
He replaces Major General Erdenebat Batsuuri of Mongolia, whose service in the position was formally acknowledged with appreciation by the Secretary-General.
Major General Minhazul Alam steps into the role with more than three decades of experience in the Bangladesh Army. Over his career, he has held several senior leadership posts, including serving as General Officer Commanding at the Army Training and Doctrine Command. Prior to that, he led the 10 Infantry Division and oversaw operations in the Cox’s Bazar area between 2024 and 2026. He also served as Commandant of the Defence Services Command and Staff College in 2024.
The United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus is among the United Nations’ longest-standing peacekeeping operations. Established in 1964, its mandate has been to help prevent renewed violence between Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot communities and to support a return to stable and normal conditions on the island.
