Authorities are urging the public to stay alert as a wave of phone scams involving individuals impersonating government officials continues to sweep across Cyprus.
According to police, scammers are calling people from both mobile and landline numbers, pretending to be representatives from government services such as the Social Insurance Services, the Tax Department, and even the Cyprus Electricity Authority.
Once they gain the victim’s trust, the callers instruct them to follow specific steps, typically involving the use of bank cards, with the ultimate goal of stealing their money.
Officials are asking the public to be extra cautious and to hang up immediately if something feels off. Under no circumstances should people share personal information like passwords, usernames, PIN codes, or bank and ID details over the phone.
If you receive a suspicious call, authorities advise double-checking the identity of the person by contacting the relevant government service directly through its official phone lines or website.
Police are continuing their investigation and stress that public awareness is the best defense.
