'€300 for a taxi ride?' Travelers allege price gouging at Cyprus airports

Passengers say drivers at Larnaca demanded hundreds for short trips.

Visitors arriving at Cyprus’s airports say they are being asked to pay unusually high taxi fares late at night, according to complaints made to 24 News.

At Larnaca Airport, one woman traveling with children reported that a driver told her there were no buses until morning and offered to take them to a nearby village for €300, later lowering the price to €200. She declined, later finding that buses were in fact available from the terminal.

In Paphos, travelers said some drivers were asking €70 to €80 for trips into the city at night. Tourists who tried to use public transportation instead said they could not find buses running at that time.

Authorities have not yet responded to the claims.
