Cyprus is moving closer to establishing its own Museum of Contemporary Art, following the recent appointment of an Advisory Committee by the Deputy Ministry of Culture. This committee is tasked with making crucial recommendations and actions to create a state-funded art museum on the island.
The announcement comes after a decision by the Council of Ministers, signaling the government's commitment to enriching Cyprus’ cultural landscape with a dedicated space for contemporary art.
The newly appointed committee, which will serve for three years, is made up of some of the island's most prominent figures in the arts and culture scene. The President of the committee is Loukia Hatzigavriel, the Director of the Leventis Foundation and Leventis Art Gallery, with other members including Theodoulos Gregoriou, a visual artist and member of the Cyprus Academy of Sciences, Letters and Arts, Andri Michael, an art theorist and professor at the Université de Picardie Jules Verne, and Katerina Stavrou, a visual artist and Secretary of the Cyprus Chamber of Fine Arts. Also joining the team is Achilleas Demetriadis, a lawyer with a deep understanding of cultural matters.
This exciting development is expected to give Cyprus a much-needed platform to showcase modern and contemporary art, helping to foster creativity and encourage new conversations about art in the context of Cypriot culture. As plans for the museum unfold, the committee will play a pivotal role in shaping its vision and ensuring that the museum becomes a significant cultural landmark in Cyprus for years to come.
