There's a common misconception that snakes hibernate throughout the winter, much like bears. However, this isn't entirely accurate. While some may become less active, snakes can occasionally awaken during winter to feed. This was recently highlighted by a video posted on the "Mushroom Lovers of Cyprus" Facebook page, showing snakes active in the wild in early January.

Cyprus is home to eight snake species, three of which are venomous. However, only one poses a significant threat to humans.

The sapite or sytaris (Malpolon insignitus) and the honeysnake or wood snake (Telescopus fallax) possess venom, but it's generally not strong enough to cause serious harm to humans. Their venom primarily serves to subdue their prey.

The third venomous snake, the viper or finch (Macrovipera lebetina), carries a potent venom that can have severe consequences if it enters the bloodstream through a bite.

The Eight species of snakes:

Macrovipera lebetina - Fina
Dolichophis jugularis - The Black Snake
Hierophis cypriensis - Cyprian Snake
Telescopus fallax - Cyprian Honeysnake
Hemorrhois nummifer - Dropes
Malpolon insignitus - Sitta
Natrix natrix cypriaca - Nerophid
Typhlops vermicularis - Anvil
Don't panic!

If you encounter a venomous snake, it's crucial to remain calm and avoid disturbing or attempting to kill it. The safest course of action is to calmly move away.

When venturing outdoors, it's advisable to wear high shoes and long pants to provide protection in case you step on a viper. Using a stick or rod to gently beat the grass or shrubs in front of you can help dislodge any potential hazards from your path. Snakes can detect strong ground vibrations and will usually flee on their own.
