Exclusive guided tours of Leventis Museum’s latest exhibit

Newsroom

The Leventis Municipal Museum of Nicosia is set to launch the second phase of its photographic series, “Three Photographic Routes – Nicosia: People and Places.” The new exhibition, covering the period from 1950 to 1960, will open on May 28, 2024, at 6 p.m.

The opening will feature two special guided tours led by the exhibition’s curators: Jenny Lyberopoulou Savvidou, Director of the Leventis Municipal Museum, and Maria Patsalosavva, Deputy Director.

This segment of the exhibition, part of a three-part series, showcases postcards and photographs from the 1950s to the early years of Cypriot independence in 1960. It highlights images from “The Eye,” the museum’s significant photographic archive, depicting Nicosia during a pivotal time in its history. The 1950-1960 period was marked by significant political upheaval, including the EOKA struggle for independence and Cyprus’s transition to independence from British rule in 1960.

The exhibit features work by Apostolos Ververis (1900-1980), the official photographer for King Paul of Greece, who documented Cyprus in 1954-1955. Also included are photographs by Felix Yacis (1922-2001?) and Takis Mourettos, who captured various aspects of Nicosia during this transformative era.

Photographs are displayed enlarged, with captions detailing the photographer, theme, and date. The exhibition is divided into three thematic sections: urban development, portraits of Nicosia’s residents, and historical events.

The exhibition runs from May 28 to August 25, 2024, in the museum’s Temporary Exhibitions Hall. Two guided tours will be available daily from 6-7 p.m. and 7-8 p.m. Reservations are required: +357 22661475 or info@leventismuseum.org.cy. The museum will also offer Brandy Sour cocktails, a popular drink from the 1950s-1960s, during the tours.
