If you love wine or just enjoy a good story, you won’t want to miss the celebration of Cyprus’ prized Maratheftiko grape happening in Paphos on November 28th. The event, hosted at Eléa Golf Course, is part of the lead-up to International Maratheftiko Day on December 1st—a global celebration of this unique, indigenous grape that’s been making waves in the world of wine.

The exhibition will feature 26 wineries from all over Cyprus, each offering their best Maratheftiko wines for tasting. It’s a rare chance to sip on some of the island’s top wines, learn about the different ways winemakers approach this special grape, and even chat directly with the people behind the labels.

You’ll get to stroll from booth to booth, tasting each winery’s take on Maratheftiko, comparing flavors, and talking shop with the winemakers. Along with the wine, there will be delicious canapés to nibble on, making it the perfect evening out for any wine lover.

There’s also a Maratheftiko Masterclass if you’re looking to dive deeper into the world of this grape. The panel of experts includes Master of Wine Angela Muir, renowned winemaker Marcos Zambartas, and George Kassianos, the President of the Cyprus Sommeliers Association. They’ll share insights into Maratheftiko’s rich history, its potential, and why more and more winemakers are focusing on it.

Maratheftiko is known for its deep red color, bold body, and fruity flavors of cherries and blackberries. Rediscovered in the 1980s, it’s now one of the most celebrated indigenous grapes in Cyprus, grown across vineyards island-wide. Its name, which comes from the Pitsilia region, refers to the fluffy, cotton-like appearance of its young leaves.

With wineries like Vasilikon Kathikas, Zambartas, KEO Malia, and many more participating, the evening promises to be a fun, informative experience for anyone interested in Cyprus’ wine culture and the Maratheftiko grape’s bright future.

Tickets for the exhibition are 20 euros, including tastings and canapés, while the Masterclass costs 40 euros (including the exhibition). Reservations are essential, so be sure to book your spot by emailing cypruswinesociety@gmail.com or calling 99 254 491.

Come for the wine, stay for the stories, and celebrate one of Cyprus’ greatest treasures—Maratheftiko!
