Markos Zambartas is deeply passionate about winemaking, viewing it as a reflection of his soul. As a second-generation winemaker, he studied oenology and took over the family business during a challenging period, when his father, Akis, battled illness before passing away. Since 2014, Zambartas Winery has been steadfastly exploring new avenues with indigenous grape varieties at the forefront.
In 2022, they introduced their inaugural Commandaria, named after the mythical figure Melusine, a spirit associated with water and springs and revered as the ancestral spirit of the House of Lusignans. This complex Commandaria blends Xynisteri and black grapes, grown together for their distinct qualities, aged for a decade in three oak barrels, and released in a limited run of 2,000 half-liter bottles.
Zambartas Winery's innovation doesn't stop there. Mark Zambartas reveals their next venture is a sparkling wine, amidst growing concerns over climate change. Focused on sustainability, the winery exclusively cultivates Cypriot grape varieties that are resilient to heat and drought, utilizes photovoltaics, and has reduced bottle weight conscientiously.
"It's through small steps that we can achieve something significant," Markos Zambartas comments. He also serves as president of WineCore, an association representing 14 wineries promoting Cypriot wines, particularly emphasizing indigenous varieties. Through WineCore, he encourages visitors to explore Cyprus's wineries, describing them as an enriching, entertaining, and educational aspect of the island.
For those interested, Zambartas wines are available in selected supermarkets, premium wine shops, and directly from the winery.
