Biden mistakenly calls Zelensky ''Putin'' at NATO event (video)

US President's slip highlights scrutiny ahead of high-stakes press conference

President Joe Biden mistakenly referred to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky as President Putin of Russia during a NATO event Thursday, just hours before facing a high-stakes press conference where his every word will be closely scrutinized.

“Now, I want to hand it over to the president of Ukraine, who has as much courage as he has determination. Ladies and gentlemen, President Putin,” Biden said, before quickly correcting himself: “He’s going to beat President Putin. President Zelensky.”

“I’m so focused on beating Putin, we’ve got to worry about it,” Biden added.

Zelensky, quick-witted, responded, “I’m better.”

“You are, a hell of a lot better,” Biden acknowledged.

Support for Ukraine has been a cornerstone of Biden’s foreign policy, prominently discussed during this week’s NATO summit. The White House announced additional military aid for Ukraine in its conflict against Russian forces.

Biden’s stumble is poised to draw significant attention as he confronts calls from some Democrats to step aside as the party’s nominee in November, following criticism of his debate performance last month. Concerns over Biden’s mental sharpness and stamina have been raised within the party, questioning his ability to vigorously campaign against former President Donald Trump and rally American voters.

Democrats will closely monitor Biden’s press conference Thursday evening to gauge his ability to coherently and sharply respond to reporters. Yet, doubts persist whether one strong performance will suffice to allay voters’ concerns.
