A large wildfire that broke out between the communities of Steni and Goudi in the Paphos district over the weekend has been largely brought under control, but one stubborn front continues to burn as fire crews battle to fully extinguish the blaze.
According to Cyprus Fire Service spokesperson Andreas Kettis, the fire has been contained on most fronts, but the northwestern perimeter remains active. “Efforts are ongoing to bring it under full control,” Kettis said in a post on Platform X, formerly known as Twitter.
The operation has drawn a significant response from both ground and air units, including helicopters and firefighting teams from the Forestry Department and Civil Defense. A mobile firefighting unit was also deployed to the area to assist in battling the flames.
Kettis noted that although the situation is improving, flare-ups continue to pose a challenge as crews scramble to prevent the fire from spreading again.
For now, the cause of the blaze remains unknown and will be investigated at a later stage, once the fire has been fully extinguished and the area is safe for forensic examination.
Residents in the surrounding areas have been watching anxiously, with smoke billowing across the horizon and aircraft swooping low to douse the fire with water. No injuries or damage to homes have been reported as of Monday afternoon.
The wildfire comes amid continued dry, windy weather, conditions that firefighters say make even small flames difficult to control.
