The man behind the wheel of the fatal crash that shattered a Limassol family just minutes into the New Year has been sentenced to 10 years in prison.
The Limassol Permanent Criminal Court on Thursday found the 45-year-old driver guilty on four counts of manslaughter for the deadly crash that occurred at 12:30 a.m. on January 1, 2024, at the intersection of Kranidiotis and Agia Anastasia streets in Polemidia.
The sentence follows a dramatic court case during which the defendant admitted to causing death by reckless, careless, or dangerous driving, as well as running a red light. The court was convinced beyond all reasonable doubt of his guilt and accepted all 22 witnesses presented by the prosecution as credible.
The violent collision, which occurred at a traffic light-controlled junction on the Limassol-Platres road, claimed the lives of 27-year-old Evanthia Georgiou, her 17-year-old brother Nikolas Georgiou, and their grandparents, 72-year-old Nikolas Zavrou and 74-year-old Evanthia Georgiou. The victims—three generations of the same family—were returning from a New Year’s celebration when their vehicle was struck.
The sentencing brings a measure of justice to a case that sent shockwaves through the island, as communities mourned a devastating loss and called for greater accountability on the roads.
