6,258 undocumented immigrants reach Cyprus

Cyprus faces a surge in unauthorized immigration despite ongoing efforts

Newsroom

The penalties imposed by the courts in Cyprus on human traffickers are very low, despite the increasing number of arrests, as reported by the state channel.

It is noted that from 2021 until now, the police have arrested a total of 263 traffickers. In 2023, only eight cases were tried, and only 12 individuals were convicted.

The prison sentence imposed ranged from three to twenty-four months, even though the criminal code allows for up to 15 years of imprisonment.

It is worth noting that in 2021, 12,391 irregular immigrants arrived in the Republic of Cyprus, while in 2022, arrivals amounted to 17,434 immigrants.

From the beginning of 2023 until August, 6,258 irregular immigrants arrived in Cyprus.
