The Cyprus government is stepping up its support for animal welfare with new funding and initiatives announced on World Animal Day.
Agriculture Minister Maria Panayiotou said the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment will provide €100,000 for dog sterilization, triple the cat sterilization budget from €100,000 to €300,000, and grant €150,000 for the creation of a Regional Temporary Dog Shelter in Palometocho.
Speaking at an event organized in collaboration with the “Little Volunteers” association and the Strovolos Municipality, Panayiotou said the initiatives are driven by love for animals and a shared commitment to their care. “All animals ask of us is love and respect,” she said, emphasizing the importance of individual responsibility in animal welfare.
The event included educational stands from government departments and NGOs, as well as free activities for children and families. Panayiotou said the government aims not only to strengthen protection for pets and farm animals, but also to highlight the role of local authorities and volunteers in ensuring animals’ well-being.
She added that the measures build on previous government programs, including legislative updates to the Dog Law, increased funding for sterilization, and expanded responsibilities for the Office of the Commissioner for the Environment to cover animal welfare.
“With these steps, we are taking concrete action to protect animals while promoting awareness and community involvement,” Panayiotou said.
The World Animal Day event carried the slogan “Because love for animals unites us”, reflecting the Ministry’s goal of fostering a culture of care and respect for all animals across Cyprus.
