A video circulating on social media has sparked concern about the city’s photo-tagging system after drivers stalled at a red light, preventing an ambulance from rushing through an intersection.
The footage, shared on the Road Report CY page, shows the ambulance approaching a busy Limassol crossroads with its sirens blaring. Vehicles in both lanes remained stopped, despite the emergency, because drivers feared triggering the fixed traffic cameras that monitor red lights, stop lines, and speed limits.
The incident highlights a troubling dilemma: citizens caught between obeying traffic laws designed to improve safety and giving way to emergency vehicles when every second counts.
“This raises a serious concern,” the post’s author said. “Should citizens be put in a position where protecting their own record could delay someone’s urgent medical care?”
The episode has prompted discussions about whether traffic enforcement systems need adjustments to prioritize life-saving situations, balancing accountability with human safety.
