President Nicos Anastasiades on Thursday expressed strong determination to participate in the informal meeting on Cyprus that the UN announced will take place in Geneva on April 27-29.
The UN announced on Wednesday that the eagerly-awaited informal five-plus-one meeting on the Cyprus Problem will take place over three days at the end of April, and will seek to determine whether common ground can be found for parties to resume formal settlement negotiations.
In a written statement on Thursday, Anastasiades said that he has the political will to attend the meeting, expressing hope that it will create the conditions for a resumption of the dialogue for a viable and functional solution that will benefit both communities on the island.
Anastasiades noted that the solution must be based on the High-Level Agreements, UN Resolutions, EU principles and must ensure that the Republic of Cyprus evolves into a functional and viable bizonal bicommunal federation, within the parameters reaffirmed by the UN Secretary General in his report issued after the meeting held in Berlin on November 25, 2019.
