Another day, another scam as Paphos woman loses €6,500 online

Fraudsters posing as a government-backed investment platform dupe elderly investor; police urge caution.

A 71-year-old woman in Paphos reported to police that she lost about €6,500 to an online investment scam posing as a government-backed platform.

Authorities said the woman saw an online advertisement in September 2025 promoting a site that claimed to be state-owned. After creating an account through the ad, she was contacted by individuals who promised to “guide” her through every investment.

Convinced that her investments were generating profits, she transferred money on two separate occasions—totaling roughly €6,500—to a bank account provided by the scammers.

The scheme unraveled when she tried to withdraw her funds. The platform refused the payout and eventually cut off all communication, leaving her out of pocket.

Police are investigating the case and cautioning the public to be wary of online ads claiming to represent official or government investment programs. They noted that scammers often use familiar logos, professional-looking websites, and fake profit dashboards to appear legitimate.

Authorities also reminded citizens that government services in Cyprus do not contact people through online ads to offer investment opportunities.
