Approximately five tons of smuggled meat were seized during a police operation carried out early Friday morning in the area between Afania (Gazikoy) and Assia (Pasakoy), in occupied Famagusta.
The operation, referred to as the "Kapan Operation," was conducted by the so-called "crime prevention unit of the Nicosia police directorate in the occupied part of the island. Authorities targeted a van suspected of transporting undeclared goods.
According to information released by the police in the occupied areas, the operation took place at approximately 2:00 AM. Inside the vehicle, police found about five tons of red meat—specifically beef and lamb—carrying official veterinary inspection stamps from the Republic of Cyprus. The meat was reportedly transported in unhygienic conditions and had not been declared to customs services.
A 40-year-old man, identified by the initials O.S., was arrested in connection with the case as the owner of the vehicle.
Investigations are continuing.
