Authorities are on high alert today as the "Coral" weather phenomenon intensifies, raising concerns over potential power outages, particularly during peak evening hours. While officials express cautious optimism, citizens are urged to conserve energy to prevent disruptions.
Chara Koushiappa, spokesperson for the Transmission System Operator, assured that electricity production should be sufficient barring unforeseen issues. Recent repairs to two malfunctioning units at Vasilikos and Dhekelia have improved the situation, adding 135 megawatts to the grid.
Despite this, energy supply remains volatile. A paradox has emerged, with power shortages at night due to high demand and daytime reductions caused by an oversupply of renewable energy that the grid cannot absorb. Koushiappa emphasized that temporary power cuts, if necessary, would last no longer than 30 minutes.
Residents with photovoltaic systems are advised to ensure their systems function properly to avoid disruptions. Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely.
