Biden breaks promise to Americans and pardons son

Critics call the move an abuse of power as Hunter Biden’s legal troubles reignite partisan fury

President Joe Biden has stirred significant controversy by granting a full and unconditional pardon to his son, Hunter Biden, despite his previous assurance that he would not intervene in his son’s legal troubles. This dramatic turn of events was announced late Sunday, just weeks before the end of Biden's presidency and ahead of Donald Trump’s anticipated return to the White House.

Back in June, President Biden explicitly stated he would not pardon Hunter after his conviction on federal gun charges. His son’s offenses included lying about his drug addiction while purchasing a firearm and failing to pay over $1.4 million in federal taxes. At the time, Biden stressed his faith in the justice system and vowed to let the law take its course.

In his pardon statement, Biden cited concerns about political interference in the legal proceedings, calling the situation a "miscarriage of justice." He expressed frustration with the toll the investigations have taken on him and his family, saying, “In trying to break Hunter, they've tried to break me.” This appears to reflect his belief that his son’s cases were politicized, fueled by partisan motives.

The pardon drew immediate criticism, particularly from Donald Trump, who labeled the decision an abuse of power and questioned its broader implications. Trump sarcastically suggested that the same clemency should extend to those convicted for the January 6 Capitol riot, aligning with his previous pledge to pardon those rioters if re-elected.

Hunter Biden’s convictions stem from a tumultuous period in his life marked by addiction and personal loss, including the death of his brother Beau. While he has publicly acknowledged his mistakes, the cases became a focal point for Republican attacks on the president, undermining Biden’s political credibility during a highly polarized election season.

The pardon comes at a politically charged moment. Although President Biden had already dropped out of the 2024 race, critics argue the move could tarnish his legacy. However, it also underscores his unwavering loyalty to his family. Hunter spent Thanksgiving with his father, reflecting the closeness of the Biden family even amid public scrutiny.

This decision not only reignites debates over presidential pardon powers but also highlights the deep partisan divisions in U.S. politics, particularly as Donald Trump prepares for his second term.
