Biker in wedding entourage accident dies in hospital

Police officer Ioakeim Loizou succumbs to his injuries two weeks following off-duty crash

Police are mourning one of their own, after an off-duty cop who was involved in a motorbike accident succumbed to his injuries Tuesday morning.

Officer Ioakeim Loizou, aged 40 from Nicosia, was seriously injured on July 7 when he lost control of his motorbike.

Loizou was one of several bikers in a wedding entourage accompanying their newlywed friends from the ceremony to the reception

Loizou was one of several bikers in a wedding entourage who were accompanying their newlywed friends following the ceremony, heading from Gouri village to Kalo Chorio for the reception.

Under circumstances that are still under investigation, Loizou lost control of his motorbike and crashed into a guardrail. Unconfirmed media reports said the collision onto the guardrail was very violent while other accounts said the bike simply overturned and injured Loizou.

The off-duty cop was taken to Nicosia General Hospital where he remained hospitalised until his death Tuesday morning.

The exact cause of death will be determined following an autopsy on Wednesday.

Loizou leaves behind a wife and a young baby.
