Oscar Pistorius, the "Blade Runner," has been granted parole after serving half of his sentence for the 2013 murder of his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp. The decision, announced in Pretoria, cited a "positive support system" and potential rehabilitation programs.
Pistorius, a double amputee sprinter, claimed he mistakenly shot Steenkamp, leading to a high-profile trial in 2014. Despite skepticism from Steenkamp's family, Pistorius is set to be released on January 5, 2024.
Having not completed his 13-year, five-month sentence, Pistorius may face electronic monitoring and travel restrictions within Gauteng Province, including Johannesburg and Pretoria.
The case, highlighting gender-based violence, continues to resonate globally.
