Building safety concerns prompt EAC building evacuation

Old Nicosia office cleared as inspections reveal structural deficiencies.

The Electricity Authority of Cyprus (EAC) has evacuated its oldest building in central Nicosia as a precautionary measure after inspections flagged seismic safety deficiencies. The decision underscores the organization's commitment to safeguarding its employees and visitors, according to EAC spokesperson Christina Papadopoulou.

Speaking to the Cyprus News Agency, Papadopoulou clarified that the affected structure is not the newer high-rise but the adjacent, much older building. "We regularly carry out checks and inspections because the protection of our staff and customers is paramount," she said.

The inspections revealed that the older building, constructed before anti-seismic legislation was introduced, required modifications to meet current safety standards. “We decided to take preventive actions to ensure the building complies with modern specifications,” Papadopoulou explained.

Staff Relocated, New Offices Sought

While only about ten employees worked in the evacuated building, they have been temporarily relocated. Some have been moved to the EAC’s central offices, while others are now housed at the regional office.

To accommodate these staff members and a wave of new hires, the EAC is actively seeking to rent additional office space near its central or regional offices. A tender for the new space has already been issued.

“This is about safety and prevention,” Papadopoulou emphasized, adding that regular inspections like these are a standard practice for the organization.

Proactive Measures for the Future

The evacuation is part of the EAC's broader strategy to ensure its facilities are compliant with safety regulations and provide a secure environment for employees and the public. As the organization works to address the seismic issues in its old building, it’s also making provisions to meet the needs of its growing workforce.

This proactive approach demonstrates the EAC’s prioritization of safety and its readiness to act swiftly to mitigate potential risks, reinforcing public confidence in its operations.
