Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides wrapped up a busy day in Rome on Friday, meeting with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and holding high-level talks with ENI CEO Claudio Descalzi as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen diplomatic and energy ties.
According to government sources, Christodoulides and Descalzi spent two hours in discussions focused on a key energy project: selling Cypriot natural gas to Europe via Egypt by 2027. The talks reportedly reached a preliminary understanding after consultations between both sides’ legal teams, with a follow-up video call scheduled to finalize details.
“The aim is to complete consultations and sign an agreement to submit the development plan to the Council of Ministers on March 31, during a natural gas forum in Egypt,” sources said. If successful, the deal would mark a major step in positioning Cyprus as a regional energy hub while supplying gas to European markets.
The Rome meetings underscore Cyprus’ strategy of deepening partnerships with Italy and European energy companies, balancing diplomacy with economic opportunities. Officials described the day’s engagements as “productive” and crucial for future collaboration in both political and energy sectors.
Christodoulides’ visit highlights a dual approach: reinforcing traditional diplomatic relations with European partners while actively pursuing energy projects that could provide long-term economic benefits and strengthen regional energy security.
