Citizenship offered for buyers of homes in occupied Cyprus

Proposal targets 20,000–25,000 new properties in Trikomo, sparking legal and political debate.

A new proposal could give Turkish citizens the right to “citizenship” if they buy property in the occupied areas of Cyprus, according to recent reports. The plan reportedly targets a stock of 20,000 to 25,000 newly built homes, primarily in the town of Trikomo.

Jafer Gurcafer, president of the Turkish Cypriot Construction Contractors Association, told Sabah newspaper that discussions are underway with the “government” in the occupied territories. The issue is also expected to be raised with Turkey’s Vice President, Cevdet Yilmaz, as the details of the plan are ironed out.

The regulation, Gurcafer said, would apply only to Turkish citizens, not buyers from other countries. Pricing for the homes reportedly ranges from $120,000 to $200,000, depending on size and location, and owners would also be able to rent out the properties for short- or long-term stays when they aren’t using them.

At the same time, the construction sector has expressed concerns about moves by the Republic of Cyprus at the European level, targeting individuals and companies involved in real estate in the occupied areas. Industry leaders are calling for stronger legal protections to support developers and buyers amid increasing scrutiny.

The proposal shows the ongoing tension over property and development in the occupied north of Cyprus, as both sides continue to navigate complex political, legal, and economic challenges.
