Restoration work will begin in the coming weeks on two historic churches in the villages of Sygkrasi and Lefka, both considered important landmarks of Cyprus’s cultural and religious heritage.
The plans were announced by Sotos Ktoris, co-chair of the Bi-communal Technical Committee on Cultural Heritage, which coordinates conservation projects across the island aimed at protecting monuments of shared historical significance.
One of the churches is Agios Prokopios in Sygkrasi, near Trikomo. The site is regarded as particularly important because the church was built on the remains of an early Christian basilica dating to the 6th century. The present structure belongs to the Middle Byzantine period, likely from the 11th or 12th century, and features surviving wall paintings that add to its artistic and historical value.
The second project concerns the Church of Panagia of Akenndou in Lefka, a listed ancient monument recognized for its architectural and historical importance.
The upcoming conservation works form part of ongoing bi-communal efforts to preserve Cyprus’s shared cultural heritage and safeguard these monuments for future generations.
