Turkey changes entry rules for Republic of Cyprus passport holders

Turkish Cypriots remain exempt under existing arrangements.

Newsroom

Turkey is changing the way it allows citizens of the Republic of Cyprus to enter the country, introducing new visa procedures that will come into force on 2 January 2026.

Under the new regulations, holders of Republic of Cyprus passports will no longer be able to obtain a sticker visa on arrival at Turkish airports or other entry points. Instead, they will be required to secure a visa in advance, either through Turkey’s electronic visa (e-visa) system or via Turkish embassies and consulates abroad.

According to reports in Turkish Cypriot media, including the website Kıbrıs Postası, this change does not apply to Turkish Cypriots who are described by those outlets as “citizens” of the self-declared “turkish republic of northern cyprus” (trnc). These individuals will continue to enter Turkey without a visa, as has been the case until now.

The “trnc” is not internationally recognised, except by Turkey, and references to its “citizens” reflect Turkey’s position rather than international law. The Republic of Cyprus remains the only internationally recognised state on the island, and its passports are treated by Turkey as foreign travel documents requiring a visa.

The distinction drawn by the Turkish authorities emphasizes the different treatment of the two communities on the island and reflects the long-standing political division of Cyprus. In practical terms, the change means that Republic of Cyprus citizens planning to travel to Turkey will need to prepare in advance, while Turkish Cypriots will continue to travel under existing arrangements.
