Cypriot-flagged ship stranded in Gulf

Officials say sailors are safe, cruise sector unaffected, but energy and supply chains could feel impact.

A Cypriot-flagged ship remains stranded in the Arabian Gulf as authorities in Cyprus closely monitor escalating tensions in the region, Deputy Shipping Minister Marina Hatzimanoli said Thursday.

The minister emphasized that the top priority is the safety of sailors, noting that roughly 1,000 ships and 20,000 seafarers are currently navigating the Gulf, including 19 vessels registered under the Cypriot flag providing specialized or support services. Only one Cypriot ship is currently on standby, waiting for safer conditions to depart.

“The basic concern is the safety of human life and, of course, that of our sailors,” Hatzimanoli said, calling the Strait of Hormuz “the most critical maritime energy passage in the world.”

Energy and supply chains under watch

While the cruise industry in Cyprus has so far remained unaffected, officials warned that prolonged instability could disrupt energy shipments and other supply chains. Deputy Director General of the Shipping Ministry Theodoulos Mesimeris said authorities are closely assessing potential impacts and are ready to respond if needed.

“Perhaps the most important thing is the energy sector, which is expected to be affected,” Mesimeris said.

Cyprus’ dependence on Gulf shipping is limited, and Hatzimanoli said there are no immediate concerns about shortages or delays affecting the island’s daily life.
