Health Minister Michalis Damianos praised the dramatic growth of Cyprus' student population during a graduation ceremony at the University of Frederick in Nicosia on Friday.
Damianos noted that over the past decade, the number of students has nearly doubled, underscoring the pivotal role of education in shaping individuals, enhancing cognitive abilities, fostering critical thinking, and improving decision-making skills. "Education not only boosts personal productivity and income but also permeates economic benefits throughout the entire economy," Damianos remarked, referencing the insights of renowned British philosopher and economist Adam Smith on education's contributions to a nation's economic progress.
Furthermore, Damianos emphasized the social benefits of education, which elevate a country's societal and cultural standards. He highlighted the significant development of the university sector in recent decades, identifying it as a cornerstone of the economy with promising prospects for further growth. He pointed out that the presence of prestigious universities has not only secured economic gains but also reversed brain drain trends, attracted foreign investments, and stimulated demand and tourism.
"Higher education in our country operates under frameworks ensuring academic quality and excellence," Damianos affirmed, praising both Greek and English-language study programs for their appeal to domestic and international students alike.
"Our universities are distinguished in research and employ experienced, globally recognized academic and research staff. Many rank high in global university rankings," he added. Damianos also noted the universities' participation in mobility programs and student exchanges with countries within and outside the EU, enhancing their attractiveness to third-country nationals.
Addressing graduates directly, Damianos urged them to pursue their goals relentlessly despite inevitable obstacles. "You will encounter many challenges along the way. Do not be discouraged and never give up," he encouraged.
In closing, he congratulated the graduates on their academic achievements, marking a significant milestone in their educational journey.
