Limassol judoka Marina Azinou delivered an outstanding international performance last week, capturing both gold and silver medals at major events in Tunis, Tunisia, and underlining her rapid rise on the world stage.
Azinou first stepped onto the top of the podium at the Tunis African Junior Cup 2026 on February 13. Producing three impressive victories against opponents from Egypt, Tunisia and Ghana, the young Cypriot dominated her category to secure the gold medal. The triumph earned her 100 valuable points in the U21 world ranking and is expected to lift her to around 13th place globally in her age group, a significant milestone in her development.
Just two days later, Azinou proved her progress extends beyond junior level. Competing in the Tunis African Open 2026 in the women’s −57kg division, she again fought her way to the final with three strong wins. She ultimately claimed the silver medal, adding another 70 points to the senior world ranking.
The result propelled the Limassol athlete up to 175th place in the world, a remarkable jump of 106 positions, and highlighted her ability to compete successfully against more experienced opposition.
Azinou was accompanied in Tunis by coach Christos Skouroumunis, while other members of the Cyprus delegation also competed, gaining valuable international experience.
Her double-medal weekend marks one of the most encouraging performances by a young Cypriot judoka this season and signals a promising trajectory as she continues her transition from junior to senior competition.
